Why do Police drive SUVs?

While Police have transitioned over the years through various types of patrol vehicles, it seems as if all agencies now are converting over to SUVs and you may be asking yourself why? Well the answer is quite easy – SUVs are the most versatile and their overall capability to perform a variety of operations is next to none! When you think about it, they drive on all types of terrain, at high speeds, and need to withstand the unexpected at all times.

While the Crown Vic was the choice of vehicle for police agencies at one time, they have moved towards SUVs for many different reasons. To begin, they over more trunk space for those times where multiple weapons may be needed in addition to all of the other necessary gear such as helmets, vests, and so much more. Beyond that, they also offer higher elevation for officers to better observe their surroundings at all times along with the ability to move quicker and more efficiently both in and out of the vehicle. These advantages are reason enough to make the transition over to SUVs in your police force if you haven’t already!
